Madison Payne Hunter, obituary, 29 December 2011

Hunter, Madison Payne, born May 3, 1916 to parents Lon and Helen Payne, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 95 on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. She was born in Chicago, IL, spent her childhood in Muskogee, OK, and she and her family moved to Phoenix in 1933. She graduated from Phoenix College in 1935, worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Co. and then Standard Oil Co. until her marriage in 1944 to Paul G. Hunter. Together, they built a house in 1949 where her hobby was creating beautiful gardens surrounding it. She enjoyed living there until her death. For the past 50 years Madison volunteered one afternoon per week at Phoenix Baptist Hospital. She was very active in the Washington Garden Club and Women's Fellowship at Encanto Community Church. She is predeceased by her husband, Paul, her son, John, her daughter, Nancy, and her twin sister Virginia. She is survived by her brother David Payne (Jackie), her sister-in-law, Lucy Milligan, two daughters, Sylvia Stocker and Elizabeth Hunter, her grandchildren, Laurie, Jason, and Benjamin, three great grandsons, Michael, Matthew, and Dylan, two nieces and five nephews. She will be remembered by all who loved her for her incredible generosity, her uncompromising friendship, and her passionate enthusiasm for life. Services will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Encanto Community Church at 2710 N. 7th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85007. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Encanto Community Church.
