What little is known about Joseph Kochowitz is essentially entirely from an 1801 baptismal record from Suriname. He was baptized into the Evangelical Lutheran church on 11 March 1801 in Paramaribo, Suriname, having been born on 25 February 1801. His parents were Stephan and Catharina Kochowitz. However there is some mystery to this record as it notes that his father was of the "Roman" religion, that is Roman Catholic, yet his mother was "Reformed." Why they chose to have him into the Evangelical Lutheran church is not clear, and both the other witnesses, Peeters Joseph Schmachler and Mariana Philippin, to the baptism mentioned were also said to be Roman Catholic.1
