Charles Grant

M, b. about 1808, d. between 19 May 1862 and 20 May 1862

Parents

Family 1: Hannah Hooker (b. about 1823)

Family 2: Malinda Hooker (b. about 1824, d. 25 November 1896)

Biography

  • Birth: about 1808. It is uncertain where he was born, as there are reasons for suspecting both Canada and New York state as possibilities.1,2
  • Parentage: Charles Grant. This is speculative, but there is an assortment of indirect documentary evidence as well as some modest genetic DNA match evidence to suggest this connection, such that he may one of the two known sons, Charles or Charles Collins Grant, of this elder Charles Grant, who died in King Township in 1847.3
  • Biography:. The reasons for this suspicion are several, but are primarily based on a couple of coincidences. The first of these is the fact of Charles's marriage to Melinda Hooker, as she is also a sister to Olive Hooker, who married Peter Grant, who likely was the son of another suspected son of Charles Grant Senior of King Township. Another coincidence is the fact that Charles Grant lived next door to a William McWilliams when he resided in Richland, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. One may recall that Peter Grant's mother was Esther McWilliams of King Township.1,4
  • Marriage: to Hannah Hooker, 31 January 1839, Manchester Township, Washtenaw County, MichiganO, age ~31, "Charles Grant and Hannah Hooker," by A. Bullard, Justice of the Peace.
Stephen P. Spear of Sharon Township and David D. Brower of Manchester Township acted as witnesses.2

  • Military Enlistment: 8 January 1862. 12th Regiment, Company F, of the Michigan Infantry9
  • Death: between 19 May 1862 and 20 May 1862, U.S. General Hospital, Keokuk, Lee County, IowaO, "Charles C. Grant, also Charles G. Grant," died from pneumonia.
According to the records from the War Department, he was admitted to the hospital on 18 May 1862 and died on 20 May 1862. However the list of casualties in the monthly report of the sick and wounded reported that Charles G. Grant died on 19 May 1862 from pneumonia. That report noted that J. C.
