Biography
- Birth: 16 December 1870, King Township, York County, Ontario, CanadaO.
The place and date of her birth described here are inferred both directly and indirectly from two records. Both the 1871 census enumeration and her 1873 baptismal record indicate that she was born in December in Ontario. However the census enumeration indicates she was born 3 months before its recording in December 1870, while her 1873 baptismal record suggests 16 December 1871 as her birthdate. The baptismal record, however is more specific about not just the date of her birth but also naming her birthplace as King Township. Nevertheless in this case the census record would be more accurate with regards to the year of her birth, or she could not have been recorded in it in April 1871.1,2

Alfred DeFriez and Elizabeth Elliott
Marriage: 14 June 1893, 401 Jarvis St., Toronto, York County, OntarioO, "Alfred Defriez and Elizabeth Elliott," by James Wild, D.D., Congregationalist pastor.
Groom: Alfred Defriez, age 23, residence Toronto, born England, bachelor, occupation garment cutter, parents John Alfred Bone Defriez and Louise Sophia B. Defriez, religion Congregationalist
Bride: Elizabeth Elliott, age 21, residence Toronto, born King Township, spinster, parents James and Mary Ann Elliott, religion Methodist
Witnesses: James Arthur Berridge, Toronto, and Sarah Jane Elliott, Toronto
The pastor who officiated the wedding, Joseph Wild, apparently had a sensational career as pastor for the Bond Street Congregational Church in Toronto. As the Dictionary of Canadian Biography observed, he was "an evangelist for the glories of the British empire and its prophetic destiny in the civilization and salvation of the world...[and] regularly drew crowds of 3000 people on Sunday evenings." Perhaps he held a special charisma to Alfred since he had been born in England. Yet more strikingly coincidental is that Wild was forced to resign just 2 weeks after he had married our couple for reasons that apparently remain somewhat mysterious.3,5,6

Brother of Local Lady Makes Strike in Radium
William H. Elliott of Chicago, a brother of Mrs. Charles Freyberg of Delta, has just made a radium strike in Canada which will make him several times a millionaire. The Chicago Examiner has the following to say about the matter:
William H. Elliott 3433 Walnut St., has struck it richer than a gold mine. He has discovered a pitch-blende deposit in Canada -- and radium, the product sells at the rate of $3.000,000 an ounce.
Mr. Elliott was prospecting in Ontario province, Canada, for mica when he came across the pitchblende, he sent a sample to the New York assayers, Ledoux & Co., who reported favorably.
Then Mr. Elliott with C. F. Schmerker, 3239 S. Halsted St., filed a claim with the Canadian government for the deposit lies. The land will cost $3 an acre.
The Canadian department of mines has also report[ed] favorably on the deposit and has agreed to take over the ore. Under the Canadian laws the radium fields are worked by the government and when the radium is extracted the government pays the prospector at the market rate for the finished product.
The claim to the land has already been established by Deputy Minister of Mines Thomas W. Gibson of Toronto. Radium of late years has been especially valuable in the treatment of cancer.
The Ledoux & Co. report says, in part: "Pitchblende of 10 per cent lead; radioactivity as determined by electroscope, very high; sample contains radium in proportion 190 milligrams per ton or ore."
The company further states: "It is impossilbe even to appraise the value of such extraordinary rich ore, since there are no established quotations."9

Alfred DeFriez
M, b. January 1869
Parents
Biography
- Birth: January 1869.1
- Parentage: Louise Sophia B. and John Alfred Bone DeFriez.2
- Marriage: to Elizabeth Elliott, 14 June 1893, 401 Jarvis St., Toronto, York County, OntarioO, age 24, "Alfred Defriez and Elizabeth Elliott," by James Wild, D.D., Congregationalist pastor.
Yet more strikingly coincidental is that Wild was forced to resign just 2 weeks after he had married our couple for reasons that apparently remain somewhat mysterious.3,2,4
