  • Death: 5 June 1944, age 61, Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO.
He died at 6:30 in the evening on Monday, June 5, as that is how it was reported in the local paper from June 6, although his death certificate recorded, more likely erroneously that he died on June 6. He died from lung carcinoma, which he had been diagnosed with 8 months earlier. His grandniece, Mary Ann Smith, said he died of "spider cancer", which probably indicates that his cancer had metastasized to other areas of his body. Both Mary Ann Smith and her husband, Robert Grant, reported that he never smoked, and his doctor, Benjamin Nibbelink, stated that his cancer was unrelated to his occupation. He was treated by Dr. Nibbelink from 2 January 1944 until his death.9,18

Charles Grant

M, b. about 1810, d. before 1851

Parents

Family: Esther McWilliams (b. 27 January 1810, d. 11 November 1881)

Biography

  • Birth: about 1810.
A great deal of mystery continues to surround Charles, his origins, and his outcome. While he likely was born in the early 1800's, even this cannot be known with certainty. As to where he was born, this is again a mystery. It could be that he was born in Canada, but then again he may have been born in the fledgling United States or in Europe. What we do know of him is signified more by his absence. Nevertheless, as in all things, the simplest explanation is usually the most probable one. Putting aside the whereabouts of his birth, we can look to King Township in York County (formerly the Home District) of Ontario as the scene of at least a very important portion of his life.
  • Names: Charles Grant; Charles Collins Grant; C. C. Grant
The reference to Esther Grant's husband, "C. C. Grant," on her tombstone in Goshen, Indiana, seems to lend weight to the possibility that our Charles Grant is the same as Charles Collins Grant named in Charles Grant Senior's will as the younger of his two sons.1
  • Parentage: Charles Grant.
Examination of records in King Township in the mid-1800's reveals a Charles Grant who died in 1847, leaving a will made out in 1845. In this will he names his wife, Christiana, as his executrix, and two sons, Charles and Charles Collins Grant, to each of whom he leaves a shilling. It seems entirely possible that our Charles is one of these two sons. As this has been the working presumption since the finding of this probate record, I will hereinafter refer to these three (Charles and his two sons) as Charles Senior, Charles Junior, and Charles Collins, in order to lessen the confusion.

There is less certainty as to who his mother may be. Christiana Mills, who married his putative father, Charles Grant Senior, on 20 May 1813 in Sandwich, Essex County, Upper Canada (now Windsor, Ontario), might be his mother or more likely his stepmother given the date of the marriage.

More mysteries surrounding Charles Senior and his boys are raised by the probate record of Christiana Grant, wife of Charles Senior. Dated 28 Nov 1850 and apparently written while Christiana was residing in Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario, she left her entire estate, which consisted of 30 pounds still owed to her by Thomas Beynon, some unclear remainder of the debt owed by Rowland Burr, and household goods valued at 5 pounds, to Sarah "Sally" Lawrence, wife of James Lawrence, of Vaughan Township. She further named Mr. Lawrence as one of her executors. No mention is made of either Charles Junior or Charles Collins in the will. However, the record indicates that there existed some question as to the veracity of the will, such that several people were called to make affidavits that she was indeed of sound mind when it was made. Among these affidavits there is mention made of an earlier will, although its contents are not revealed. More importantly, one witness reports that Christiana had a "drunken, worthless" stepson, and that she intended to leave him nothing. This suggests that at least one of Charles Grant Senior's sons was a stepson to her.2,3,4,5

  • Marriage: to Esther McWilliams, after 1830.
No record has been found of the marriage of Esther McWilliams to Charles Grant. Most likely it occurred between 1830 and 1833, but may have been as early as 1827. Following Charles' apparent early death, she was left alone to raise their five children, which must have been quite a challenge for a woman who was far from wealthy. No record has been found indicating that she ever remarried. The only direct evidence of their marriage is her tombstone inscription indicating that her husband was C. C. Grant. Peter Grant's 1909 death certificate names Charles Grant and Esther MacWilliams as his parents. Peter's younger sister, Mary Ann, provided the information for his death certificate. James Grant's 1904 death certificate names Charles Grant and Esther McWitten as his parents.1,6,7

  • Family Event - birth of child: September 1848, parent of John Grant.12
  • Death: before 1851.
As stated earlier, Christiana Grant's will made no mention of any children or stepchildren, but an affidavit provided at the probate of her will after her death stated that she had a "drunken, worthless" stepson to whom she would leave nothing. No other children were mentioned, and whether the "drunken stepson" referred to Charles Grant Junior or Charles Collins Grant is uncertain, but it does leave the implication that at least one of the two sons of Charles Grant Senior had died sometime between their father's 1845 will and Christiana's 1850 will.

Further evidence that he had died in the early 1850s or earlier comes from the 1854 tax assessment records in King Township, showing his wife as a landowner but not him.13,14,5

Esther McWilliams

F, b. 27 January 1810, d. 11 November 1881

Parents

Family: Charles Grant (b. about 1810, d. before 1851)

Biography

  • Birth: 27 January 1810, King Township, York County, Ontario, CanadaO. Esther may have been one of the several children of Caleb McWilliams and Hepsabet Wheeler, who were early settlers in King Township.1
  • Parentage: Caleb McWilliams and Hepsabet Wheeler.
Esther was likely one of the several children of Caleb McWilliams and Hepsabet Wheeler, who were early settlers in King Township.2
  • Marriage: to Charles Grant, after 1830.
• Tax Paid: 1854, King Township, York County, Canada WestO, 50 acre plot comprising southwest quarter of concession 3, lot 12. The value of the lot was assessed at 100 pounds without any additional personal property valuation. Next door on the northwest quarter was Susan McWilliams, suspected to be either a sister or sister-in-law of Esther's, and that property had the same valuation.

William Wood owned a 50 acre plot on the same lot, noted to be the "east quarter," presumably meaning either the northeast or southeast quarter. This lot was assessed at 200 pounds, 175 comprising real estate, and the 25 for the personal estate.

John Ferguson owned the other 50 acre plot on the same lot. There was no specification for which portion of the lot this would have been, but must have been either the northeast or southeast quarter. This real estate was assessed at 150 pounds. He also owned another lot comprising 58 acres on concession 3, lot 10, valued at 500 pounds with an additional 50 pounds of personal estate.

The further implication of this record, given that she is listed as the land owner, is that her husband had died before the time of this assessment.10
  • Tax Paid: 1859, King Township, York County, Canada WestO, 50 acre plot comprising southwest quarter of concession 3, lot 12.
She was listed as a freeholder. The value of the lot was assessed at 500 pounds without any additional personal property valuation. Next door on the northwest quarter was John Campbell, age 35. He was listed as a householder rather than freeholder, and the 50 acre property valued at 500 pounds as well.

Robert Norman, age 40, lived as a householder on the east half of concession 3, lot 12. The 100 acre property was owned by Thomas Fergussion, the real estate valued at 1500 pounds, and personal estate valued at 200 pounds.11
  • Census: 14 January 1861, King Township, Home District, Canada WestO, Canada West census of 13 January 1861, head of household, p. 21.

  • Land Transaction - Borrower: 30 April 1867, King Township, York County, Canada WestO. Esther and her son took out a three year mortgage from John Ferguson, “yeoman of King Township,” for $260 with interest to paid at 8% per annum. Thomas Scott, a farmer of King Township, and John Campbell were witnesses to this.15
  • Land Transaction - Grantor: 29 October 1867, King Township, York County, Ontario, CanadaO, "Esther Grant to John Grant," 10 acres of original 50 acre lot. Esther sold her son John 10 acres of this parcel outright for $12. John Ferguson witnessed this sale, and immediately following the young John Grant then sold the parcel to Ferguson for $300. John Edward McNally, a merchant of Aurora, and John Allison, a smith of Whitchurch Township, witnessed this transaction. Three days later the previous mortgage taken by John and his mother from John Ferguson was discharged.16,17,18
  • Family Event: 7 October 1868, Toronto, York County, OntarioO.
The Chancery Court decreed that her son, John Grant, was “absolutely debarred and foreclosed of and from all right, title, and equity of redemption” of any of the 50 acre property he had earlier purchased from her, and title of that land should revert wholly to her. Shortly thereafter a judgment was made on 15 January 1869 that the remaining 40 acre property was to revert wholly to Esther's ownership as well.19,20,21

Ester Grant, white, female, age 70, widowed, housekeeping, cannot write, born Canada, father born Scotland, mother born New York23
  • Will: 1 January 1881, Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO. The will was witnessed by Aaron S. Zook and Noah Hoyt. Her will named her son, James Grant, executor of her estate. To him, she left a debt owing to her by one John Furgeson of Ontario, Canada. The debt was in the amount of $600 plus annual interest and was secured by mortgage and left in care of one Walter Scott of Ontario, Canada. This debt, she stated, should become payable upon her death. From her description of this debt, it appears that she had been the owner of some piece of land in Ontario which she had sold to John Furgeson. The remainder of her personal estate she left to her children, John Grant and Charlotte Annett, to be divided between them equally. She does not specifically refer to them as her children, however the fact that they are named in her will strongly suggests just that. There is no mention at all of her son, Peter Grant, or her daughter, Mary Ann (Grant) Elliott.7

James Grant

M, b. 11 August 1835, d. 10 January 1904

Parents

Family: Sarah J. Paulus (b. August 1837, d. 14 October 1914)

Biography

  • Biography: FROM ABT 1860 TO 1904. As previously noted, James spent most of his adult life working in the profession of a stone and brick mason. In fact, he eventually was a member of the Masons.

We are in luck to know a fair amount about James' chosen occupation. The first hint of his occupation as a mason came from his grandnephew, Robert Grant, grandson of John Grant. Robert related numerous times that John used to work with his brother, James, in Goshen, "pouring sidewalks." Eloquent confirmation of this came in the discovery of the work of Poor Pat Prodpen of Parry Sound, A.K.A. James Elliott, brother-in-law of James Grant.

Wholly deaf and nearly blind, nevertheless Mr. Elliott penned several short, amusing works, among them, Glimpses of Life, and Sketches of Character in Canada. It is in this tiny book that he mentioned the work of his brother-in-law, James. After waxing poetic about sidewalks and how their upkeep indicates the characters of their respective custodians, he notes, "It is to James Grant of 513 South 7th Street, manufacturer of cement tile, sewer pipe, window sills and concrete pavements that the good citizens of Goshen are indebted for the largest and the best constructed portion of the admirably good sidewalks that add to the manifold attractions of their model city." He further relates, "No one understands and attends to this most important part of this particular business better and more carefully than James Grant, and he is not only a remarkably clever and skilful [sic] mechanic, with a thoroughly practical knowledge of the most minute details of the several branches of his profession, but he is a conscientiously honest and honourable gentleman, and as a consequence he is at times under quite a pressure of business engagements, not only in Goshen, but in neighbouring towns and cities, so that he is at times obliged to employ quite a number of men. One special branch of his profession is the making of cement or artificial stone vaults for graves, and in this line his services have been called into requisition for scores if not for hundreds of Goshen's most respected citizens who are now sleeping their last long sleep in the beautiful Oakwood cemetery in the north-western suburbs of the city, near the softly murmuring waters of the smoothly flowing Elkhart river."1,2,3
  • Birth: 11 August 1835, King Township, York County, Ontario, CanadaO.4,5,6,7,1
  • Parentage: Charles Grant and Esther McWilliams. "Charles Grant and Esther McWitten" They were named in his death certificate, said to have been born in Canada, and the information presumably provided by his wife.7
  • Census: 12 January 1852, King Township, York County, Canada WestO, 1851 Canada West census conducted 12 January 1852, enumeration district 1, p. 25, lines 15-25.
James appears to be living with the Sylvester family in a one and a half story log house, and he is the only member of the household not said to be a member of the family.

Samuel Sylvester, shoemaker, born Ireland, Wesleyan Methodist, age 37, male, married

  • Biography: 1859. When James actually emigrated from Ontario to the United States is unclear. While one census enumeration suggests he first immigrated to the United States in 1846 at the age of 11, this is almost certainly incorrect. The earliest we've been able to find him in any American records is 1859 when he married Sarah in Kankakee, Illinois. What he was doing in Illinois remains a mystery, although given James' later trade as a mason, it seems very possible that he was acting as an apprentice of some sort during this time. It may be that James immigrated to the United States in 1856 rather than 1846. What is certain is that he left Ontario sometime after 1851 and before October 1859.

    Sarah Jane Grant Will

Filed for Probate in Circuit Court This Morning

The will of Sarah Jane Grant, who died here October 14, was filed for probate in the circuit court this morning. John A. Bickel and Jacob C. Leidner are named as executors in the document, which bears date of June 2, 1914. Two codicils, dated June 2, 1914, are incorporated in the instrument. It is estimated that Mrs. Grant possessed about $600 at the time of her demise. She directs that $50 shall be paid the person who cared for her in her last sickness. Mabel Grant Rensberger, wife of Roy Rensberger, daughter of Mrs. Grant's foster son, William H. Grant is bequeathed $100, a gold watch and chain and a sewing machine. One hundred dollars is willed to Charles Grant, son of the late William H. Grant. Household effects are given to Mary E. Grant-Strong of Norman, Okla., Jane Rockwell of Kempton, Ill., and Rose Aust and Ethel Baker, nieces, of Goshen, excepting the sideboard, which goes to Nora Aust of Goshen. James Grant, son of the late William H. Grant, is to receive $5, Lawrence Grant $25 and Ardath Louise Grant $25. Ella Grant, widow of William H. Grant, is bequeathed $25. Similar bequests are made to Owen Aust, George Aust of Paragould, Ark., and Mary E. Grant-Strong. The First Christian church of Goshen is to receive $100 from the estate. Personal effects, pictures etc.. are willed to the children already mentioned in the will. One codicil directs the burial of Mrs. Grant's body beside that of her husband in Oak Ridge cemetery and the other provides that if any balance is found after the payment of bequests specified it shall go to the First Christian church.

The will is not drawn with strict conformity to legal requirements and was evidently written after only partly following form. Many of the figures bear evidence of being incorrect. As there is so little involved, there is no probability of any contest.12
