Parents
Biography
- Birth: about 1826, Seneca County, New YorkO+.1
- Parentage: Most likely he was the son of Stephen B. Crane and Eunice McCarty. His 1905 marriage record named his parents as Stephen Crane and Unice McCarty. His son, Horace, in his 1909 death record, reported that his parents were Stephen Crane of Scotland and Sarah Cartney of Ireland. Putting aside the reputed birthplaces, this is the only direct or indirect inevidence that Joseph's mother was named Sarah rather than Eunice. What is less clear is whether this may have resulted from some confusion on the part of Horace Crane, whose maternal, rather than paternal, grandmother, was named Sarah.2,3
- Census: 1 June 1830, Tyre, Seneca County, New YorkO, federal census of 1 June 1830, household of Stephen B. Crane, "Stephen B. Crane," who is presumed to be the free white male between the age of 30 and 39.
Joseph was most likely one of the two male children under 5 years of age.4

All of them essentially testified in support of Joseph, although her father only testified to the fact that the couple had been married.10

According to the marriage record, Joseph resided in South Bend at the time of their marriage, while Lucyette resided in Battle Creek. Despite their advanced ages, both were still working, he as a laborer, and she as a housekeeper. The record notes, almost certainly incorrectly, that both bride and groom had been married twice before.3
