Jonathon Johnson
M, b. about 1853
Biography
- Birth: about 1853, New York, New YorkO.1
- Census: 2 June 1900, 74 Calhoun StreetO, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganO, federal census of 1 June 1900, head of household, dwelling 45, family 60, house rented.
John Johnson, head, white, male, born 1852, age, 48, white, born New York, parents birthplace unknown, carpenter, 0 months unemployed, able to read and write, speaks English
Lucy E. Grant, housekeeper, white, female, born April 1881, age 19, single, born Indiana, father born Canada (English), mother born Michigan, housekeeper, able to read and write, speaks English2
- Residence: 1903, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganO.1
- Occupation: 1903, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganO, carpenter.1
- Marriage: to Lucy Etta Grant, 24 December 1903, Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO, age ~50, by Rev. J. Cost, pastor of the United Brethren in Christ. The bride's brother, Daniel, acted as a witness to the ceremony.1
- Census: 5 May 1910, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganO, federal census of 15 April 1910, head of household.3
- Divorce Filing: from Lucy Etta Grant, 19 December 1911, Calhoun County, MichiganO+, "Jonathon Johnson v. Lucy Johnson."
There are a number of interesting things about Johnson's bill of complaint. First, perhaps somewhat tellingly, he does not recall the exact date of their marriage, although he does accurately recall that they were married in Goshen, Indiana. He mistakenly attests that they were married in 1902, although they were actually married on Christmas Eve 1903 - which makes the fact that he can't recall their exact marriage date even stranger.
He further notes that since the time of their marriage Lucy has left him on six different occasions, ranging from "six months to two years."
He also indicates that he filed for divorce once before after she had left him for a year but then returned asking for his forgiveness. However only a record has been found from 1905 of Lucy filing for divorce from him, rather than the other way around.
As is perhaps not completely unusual, Lucy made no response to his complaint, and ultimately the divorce was granted without contest.4
- Divorce granted: from Lucy Etta Grant, 20 May 1912, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganO, age ~59.5
- Marriage: to Lucy Etta Grant, 4 July 1912, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO, age ~59, by W. H. Irwin, Minister.6

Peter Grant
M, b. 14 August 1833, d. 14 September 1909
Person Exhibits
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 14 August 1833, King Township, Home District, Upper CanadaO.
Most records suggest a birth year around 1832 to 1833, although some as early as 1826 or as late as 1834. His death certificate gives his birthdate as 14 August 1833. The 1900 census also provides a birth month of August. Nearly all records indicate a birthplace of Canada, although one record suggests instead New York. That said, no records found have clearly established King Township as the place of Peter's birth, but based on other information known about his mother specifically, it does seem most likely that he was born in or around King Township.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
- Parentage: Charles Grant and Esther McWilliams. His younger sister, Mary Ann, provided this information for his 1909 death record. While she wasn't present at his birth, she would likely have had the most reliable knowledge about his parentage among anyone still living at that time.1
- Census: 12 January 1852, King Township, York County, Canada WestO, 1851 Canada West census conducted 12 January 1852.
Peter appears to be living with the Cutting family in a single story log house, and he is the only member of the household not said to be a member of the family.
George Cutting, born Canada, Episcopalian, age 25, male, married
Sarah Cutting, born England, Episcopalian, age 27, female, married
Jane Cutting, born Canada, Episcopalian, age 8, female, single
Rachel Cutting, born Canada, Episcopalian, age 6, female, single
Elizabeth Cutting, born Canada, Episcopalian, age 4, female, single
Mary Cutting, born Canada, Episcopalian, age 2, female, single
Ann Cutting, born Canada, Episcopalian, age 1, female, single
Peter Grant, born Canada, Episcopalian, age 18, male, single9
- Immigration: between 1852 and 1855, to Howlandsburg, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO.
Peter most likely emigrated from Canada to Michigan sometime between 1852 and 1855. During these early years in Michigan he is said to have been employed at Howland's Mill. In later years, he was described as being a large, powerful man over six feet tall during this time. One story we have learned occurred around his early time in this part of Michigan has to do with a wrestling match he had with a local man who had never been beaten before. The story goes that this other young man challenged anyone in a crowd to take him on, and Peter volunteered. Somewhat to the unexpected delight of the crowd, Peter not only bested the champion, but he then "rolled" him 10 feet off of Howlandsburg Pond dam into the pond below with a dramatic splash. The young now dethroned champion was William "Bull" Shafter, who would go on a few years later to earn a Medal of Honor during the Civil War, and decades after that led the American expeditionary force that invaded Cuba during the Spanish-American War.10
- Biography: 1855, Ross Township, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO.
This story, while likely exaggerated if not largely fictional, would seem to confirm that Peter already resided in Ross Township at the time of his marriage to Olive Hooker in 1855, although it is possible that this spontaneous wrestling match occurred after they were married. Regardless it being a small community at the time I would wonder if Olive may have been in the crowd.8
- Marriage: to Olive M. Hooker, 5 August 1855, the home of the bride's father, Ross Township, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO, age 21, "Peter Grant and Allin M. Hooker," by S. Howland, Justice of the Peace.
The ceremony was witnessed by George Gurnsey and Helen E. Bible.8

- Family Event - Will: 1 January 1881, Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO, not named as an heir in the will of Esther McWilliams. Neither was his sister, Mary Ann Elliott, although his brothers, James and John, as well as his sister, Charlotte Annett, were all mentioned. The reasons for this are not at all clear, but neither Peter nor Mary Ann lived in Goshen at that time, unlike their other siblings.21

- Court: 3 May 1898, Michigan Asylum for the Insane, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO, petition for commitment on the grounds of insanity.
Peter petitioned the Probate Court for the commitment of his son, Luther, on the grounds of insanity.
The earliest hint that something may have not been quite right with Luther was when he was arrested after acting "mysteriously" near the jail in Kalamazoo in November of the previous year. Then three days before Peter's petition to commit him, Luther was arrested again in Kalamazoo after being found by the river after an accident with a horse and cart, in which apparently the horse did not survive.25,26,27

- Biography: after 1900.
During Peter's later years, he was frequently referred to as "Uncle Peter" by at least some of his neightbors and friends. Sometime during the 1900s his wife, Martha, became paralyzed and unable to care for herself. Apparently at some point, it became impossible for Peter to care for her either, and she was moved to the County Farm in Hastings, which was otherwise known as the poorhouse. Eventually Peter himself somewhat reluctantly left his log cabin in Hope Township to live with his wife at the county farm.10

On the same day that his wife died, a newspaper article appeared in the Kalamazoo Gazette reporting that Peter was living in the Barry County Poorhouse in Hastings and was not expected to live much longer. The article further stated that he had always had a fear of ending up in the poorhouse, but despite working hard for many years, he had been swindled of his small savings because of a bad investment. The article further stated that Peter was "nearly 90 years old," but this is almost certainly wildly incorrect. But then this article also reported that Peter spent his "boyhood" in Kalamazoo County a few miles south of Gull Lake, but we know that that is incorrect - at least depending on where one draws the line on one's boyhood, but we know that Peter was probably no younger than 18 when he arrived in Kalamazoo County.10
- Family Event - death of daughter: 31 July 1909, home on W. Clinton St., Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO, death of Bessie Grant, age 41.34

Bessie E. Fuller, death certificate, 2 August 1909
- Biography: August 1909.
For a long time I was unable to find a record of Peter's death. I surmised that he may have gone to live with one of his children after the death of his wife in July 1909, not to mention the deaths of 2 of his children during the same month. Despite this supposition, searches of the indexes to deaths in Allegan, Barry, Kalamazoo, Van Buren and Calhoun Counties in Michigan, as well as Elkhart County in Indiana turned up no death record for Peter. Ultimately a land record provided an important clue.
- Land Transaction: 21 August 1909, Hope Township, Barry County, MichiganO, "Peter Grant to Kathleen Modrack," north half of northeast quarter of section 22.
The land comprised 80 acres, and was sold for one dollar and other valuable consideration. Kathleen was Peter's niece by his sister, Mary Ann. Kathleen had also been the first wife of his stepson, Eugene Hyde, but they had divorced and she had remarried by the time of this land sale.35
- Death: 14 September 1909, age 76, Caledonia, Marion County, OhioO.
Peter died less than a month later in Ohio at the home of this same niece at about 6 o'clock in the evening. His niece's husband, Dr. J.C. Modrack, identified himself as his physician in the last weeks of his life, and noted that he been suffering from cancer of the lip for the past 10 years and died from "uremic poisoning," that is kidney failure. The death certificate further identified his sister, Mary Ann Elliotte [sic], of Goshen as the informant for the information provided, which might suggest that she was present in Ohio at the time of his death. According to the local death notice, he had been visiting with the couple during the last few weeks of his life and passed away suddenly. His death notice further noted that his remains were going to be removed to Hastings, Barry County, Michigan for burial, although it doesn't identify the cemetery.36,1

Children Want Will Set Aside by Court
Claim Mrs. Kathleen Modrack Gained Grant's Farm Fraudulently
Say He Was Incompetent
Legal Tangle is On Over Property of Late Pioneer of Kalamazoo and Barry Counties -- Defendant Rescued Deceased From County Farm
Considerable interest has been created by the fact that Theodore Grant, of Allegan, and Mrs. Adeline Ray, of Nebraska, children; and John Baker of Kalamazoo, Myra Betts of Boyne Falls, and Agnes Baker of Goshen, Ind., grandchildren of the late Peter Grant, a pioneer of Kalamazoo and Barry counties, have begun suit in the circuit court of Barry county to recover from Mrs. Kathleen Modrack, of Caledona, Ohio, a farm valued at $2795, which Grant deed to Mrs. Modrack, his niece, after she rescued him from the Barry county poor house and took him to her home, where he died.
Defeated Shafter
Grant, who was a well-known wrestler in the pioneer days of Kalamazoo county, became widely known in the western part of the state before the Civil war by defeating in a wrestling match, the late Major General William R. Shafter, who lived at Galesburg. The match took place in Howlandsburg Mills, and ended when the future distinguished officer was rolled in the millpond in the presence of a large crowd.
Grant went to Hope township after the war and lived on a farm till he and his wife were too feeble from old age to work any longer. They deeded the farm to a neighbor, who had cared for them, but they became ill and were moved to the county farm. Mrs. Grant died during the summer. Soon after Mrs. Modrack located her uncle in the poor house and came to Hastings.
Deed Farm Away
The farm was deeded back to Grant, who in turn deeded it to Mrs. Modrack. She took him to her home in Ohio, and Grant died three weeks later at the age of 93 years. He was overcome with joy when he found that he would not have to died in the poor house.
Dr. and Mrs. Modrack took the body to Cedar Creek for burial. During the last few years, it is alleged, Mr. Grant heard nothing of the children of his first wife.
In the bill of complaint the children declare Grant was incompetent when he deeded the farm to Mrs. Modrack, whom they allege, also gained the farm fraudulently by getting him to give her the deed on August 21. Circuit Court Commissioner James M. Smith has issued an injunction adjoining Mrs. Modrack from disposing of the property till action has been taken in court.37
