Biography

  • Birth: 15 April 1881, IndianaO.1
  • Parentage: Mary Alice ("Alice") Crane and John Grant.2
  • Census: 2 June 1900, 74 Calhoun StreetO, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganO, federal census of 1 June 1900, housekeeper in the household of Jonathon Johnson, dwelling 45, family 60, house rented.
Lucy E. Grant, housekeeper, white, female, born April 1881, age 19, single, born Indiana, father born Canada (English), mother born Michigan, housekeeper, able to read and write, speaks English

Her mother and 2 year old baby brother, Clinton, lived in the house next door at 70 Calhoun Street. She and Mr. Johnson, who was considerably older, would marry a little over 3 years later.3
  • Occupation: 1903, Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO, domestic.4
  • Residence: 1903, Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO.4
  • Marriage: to Jonathon Johnson, 24 December 1903, Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO, age 22, by Rev. J. Cost, pastor of the United Brethren in Christ. The bride's brother, Daniel, acted as a witness to the ceremony.4
  • News Article: 14 March 1906, Kalamazoo Gazette, (Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.)
Mrs. Lucy Johnson of Battle Creek, is spending a few days with relatives here.5
  • Witness - Marriage Registration: 3 July 1907, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO, Horace William Crane and Lissa Bush, "Horace Wm. Crane and Lissa (Bush} Clary," by E. V. Armstrong, Pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church.6
  • Census: 5 May 1910, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganO, federal census of 15 April 1910, household of spouse, Jonathon Johnson.7
  • Divorce Filing: by Jonathon Johnson, 19 December 1911, Calhoun County, MichiganO+, "Jonathon Johnson v. Lucy Johnson."
There are a number of interesting things about Johnson's bill of complaint. First, perhaps somewhat tellingly, he does not recall the exact date of their marriage, although he does accurately recall that they were married in Goshen, Indiana. He mistakenly attests that they were married in 1902, although they were actually married on Christmas Eve 1903 - which makes the fact that he can't recall their exact marriage date even stranger.

He further notes that since the time of their marriage Lucy has left him on six different occasions, ranging from "six months to two years."

He also indicates that he filed for divorce once before after she had left him for a year but then returned asking for his forgiveness. However only a record has been found from 1905 of Lucy filing for divorce from him, rather than the other way around.

As is perhaps not completely unusual, Lucy made no response to his complaint, and ultimately the divorce was granted without contest.8
  • Divorce granted: from Jonathon Johnson, 20 May 1912, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganO, age 31.9
  • Marriage: to Frank Wesley Lurvey, 4 July 1912, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO, age 31, by W. H. Irwin, Minister.
The bride's parents acted as witnesses to the ceremony.10
  • Death: 10 April 1913, age 31, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO. She died from Bright's disease (chronic kidney disease) complicated by chronic convulsions.2
  • Burial: 13 April 1913, Riverside CemeteryO, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO. Block A, Lot 18.
Grave Marker: none found, burial record found in plat records of cemetery office11

One of his hobbies is walking. He will walk back and forth for an hour at a time. Sometimes he will arise in the night and put on his things and go out and walk. Recently he stayed up until four o'clock in the morning in order that he might walk. He collects large quantities of practically worthless articles and puts them under his bed. A short time ago his father and brothers made him clean out under his bed and the things that were taken out would have made a small wagon load. He is violent at times.10

Sarah Esther Grant

F, b. between March 1878 and June 1878, d. 26 March 1886

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: between March 1878 and June 1878, IndianaO. Correlating the age of 7 provided on her 1886 death certificate and the age provided in the 1880 census enumeration suggests a time frame for her birthdate. However there is disagreement between these records as to where she was born, whether in Indiana (according to the death certificate) or Michigan (according to the census).1,2
  • Parentage: Mary Alice ("Alice") Crane and John Grant.2
  • Names: Sarah Esther Grant; Sarah E. Grant; Sarah Astor Grant. While Astor is the middle name given for her on her 1886 death certificate, this is a derivative record created by the Elkhart County Health Department from the original records, and the only other record that refers to a middle name for her provides her name as "Sarah E. Grant." Sarah Esther would appear to be more likely, as this would indicate that her namesakes were one of her maternal great grandmothers, Sarah (Benson) Parmeter, who at least partially raised her mother; and Esther Grant, her paternal grandmother.
  • Census: 12 June 1880, Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO, federal census of 1 June 1880, household of parents, enumeration district 39, page 27, dwelling 244, family 261.
John Grant, white, male, age 31, married, teaming, "spinal affection," born Canada, mother born Canada
Alice Grant, wife, white, female, age 22, married, keeping house, born Michigan, father born Michigan, mother born Michigan
Eliza L., daughter, white, female, age 8, at school, born Michigan, father born Canada, mother born Michigan
Sarah E., daughter, white, female, age 2, born Michigan, father born Canada, mother born Michigan2
  • Death: 26 March 1886, her home, Goshen, Elkhart County, IndianaO. According to her obituary she may have died the prior evening. The cause of her death was given as diphtheria or "membranous croup." While this is relatively rare now due to immunizations and most cases can be mild, the mortality rate of diphtheria in some outbreaks has been greater than 10%.3,4,1
