Biography

  • Birth: 13 March 1868, Karšinauka, Ponevezsky, Kovno, RussiaO. Jurgis Plentauskas, as he was referred to in his baptismal record, was born to Kazimieras Plentauskas and Elžbieta Katinaitė. The vicar at his baptism 4 days later, along with one or both of his parents, were presumably the informants for the information supplied.1,1
  • Baptism: 17 March 1868, Panevėžys Roman Catholic Church, Panevėžys, Ponevezsky, Kovno, RussiaO, "Jurgis Plentauskas," by Fr. Butavičius. His godparents were Petras Vyšniauskas and Uršulė Predienė, wife of Jonas Preidys.1
  • Immigration: 31 March 1893, to New York, New YorkO, "Jurgis Plintantski." The passenger list described him as a 28-year old farmer and citizen of Russia. He was noted to have come from "Korono," which may be a corruption of Kovno (later known as Kaunas).2

  • Marriage: to Agnes Gretchen, 20 May 1897, Grand Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New YorkO, age 29. This may be incorrect however, a 6 June 1897 baptism record for their oldest son, George, indicates that his birth was on 18 May 1897. It may be instead that they were married in 1896 or even 1894 or 1895 on this date.3

  • Names: Agnes Gretchen, Agnes Grechen, Agata Greczna, Agata Gzecna, Agatha Grecna, Aggie Gezotchner Her married names included Agnes Linsky, Agatha Linsky, Agnes Linski, Agatha Lentauskas, and Agnes Beaty. It remains unclear what her original birth name was, however from the records she directly participated in - her naturalization record and her attestation for her son's delayed birth registration - it seems most likely that it was either Greczna or Gzecna, or something similar to those rather than Gretchen.
  • Marriage: to Jurgis Plentauskas, 20 May 1897, Grand Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New YorkO, age ~21. According to the delayed birth record of their son, Aleksander Lentauskas (Linsky), for which his mother was an informant, George Lentaukas (Linsky) and Agatha Grecna were married on 20 May 1897 on Grand Street in Brooklyn, New York. Agnes Lindsey, as she was referred to, rented her home for $38 per month. According to the census, she had been born between 1876 and 1877 in Lithuania to Lithuanian parents. The census indicates she was currently married, and had been married at age 20. Her native language was listed as Polish, but it was said she could speak English, but could not read nor write. It further noted that she had emigrated in 1896 and was still an alien, and moreover was unemployed.5
  • Marriage: to Robert Beaty, 20 May 1933, Baltimore, MarylandO, age ~57, "Agnes Greczna and Robert Beaty."6

She gave her birthdate as 8 April 1878, although that was followed by a question mark. She named her father as "Samuel Beatty," although she gave her maiden name as "Agnes Gretchen Beatty." She named her mother as "Martha Lessell." She signed her name to the document, but it looks like the document was filled out by someone else, as the handwriting is different.8
