According to a brief newspaper article, Belle was sent to jail by Justice William C. Miller after her husband had accused her of infidelity. Her subsequent court case was scheduled for September 1894.11

The date and place of her death remain uncertain, however in his 1900 census enumeration, her husband identified himself as widowed. He also noted that he had been married for 12 years prior to becoming a widower. Since they had been married in September 1882, this would then suggest that she had died between 1894 and 1895. However whether she had actually died at this time, or they had just separated or divorced, remains unclear.13

A man learned to be Luther Grant from Bristol, Ind., who was acting very mysteriously in the vicinity of the jail Tuesday, was locked up by Under Sheriff Eberstein. The man was crazy and the officials at Bristol notified. Grant's father lives in Hope township, Barry county.7

Luther Grant, believed to be insane, who was found near the river on the east with a wreck of a horse and cart, was placed in jail yesterday by Patrolman Frand Hayward. The horse was later planted.8

According to the examinations made of him 2 days earlier by two different doctors, he was found to have a "weak" mind that was "unable to reason." The examiners further found that his talk was "rambling and incoherent." He was said to hear voices, which he believed controlled him. One of the examiners noted that he believed himself to be "a man whom God talks to and he must do his bidding." The file further refers to Luther as married yet indigent and a "tramp."9,7,8
