IV, p. 127), reporting that "Captain Kimball was distinguished for his hospitality and for the interest he took in educational and benevolent enterprises. His fondness for home and agricultural pursuits were attested by his residence of more than fifty years upon his farm on the Connecticut river, which in point of culture and beauty was unsurpassed in that beautiful valley...He was identified with all the early internal improvements in New England. When De Witt Clinton commenced the construction of the Erie and Champlain canals...he was referred to him as the man who had been practically engaged in constructing the Middlesex [from Boston to Lowell], the first canal in this country...For many years Gov. Clinton consulted him in all matters of practical difficulty in relation to the canals.”1
