  • Birth: 18 July 1832, New YorkO. His death certificate identified this as his birthdate, although it indicated he was born in Canada. There is conflicting infrmation in several records regarding his birthplace, including New York, Ohio, and Connecticut. The earliest census that has been found with him enumerated indicated that he had been born in New York. As he lived with his parents at that time, they would have presumably best known which state he had been born in.1,2

  • Biography: 1871. Over the course of his life, Samuel also apparently developed the skills of a self-taught veterinarian, and he was widely known throughout the county for his work. It has been said that even many years after his death, local farmers were still using some of his valuable prescriptions. Like many other local rural residents, he also hunted and trapped in order to provide for his growing family.3

    Samuel Rector died Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at his home in Richland township of stomach trouble, aged 67. He leaves a wife and five sons and five daughters, all but one residents of this county. Mr. Rector had lived for 40 years upon his farm, and was well respected. The funeral will be held Saturday at 1 o'clock at the house. Rev. Peatling of Richalnd will officiate. The interment will be in East Cooper cemetery.8

  • Adeline Hawley moved to in Richland, Kalamazoo County, MichiganO, in 1845, along with William Hawley and Eliza Hall. They made the trip via via boat and canal boat to Detroit, and then overland by covered wagon to Richland. There was a Potawatomi settlement near their new homestead, headed by Chief Noon Day. Many of the local Potawatomi children were among her earliest playmates. Like several of her siblings, she also learned to speak Potawatomi at least to some degree, although she was never fluent as was her brother, Albert, who became good friends with the son of Chief Petoskey. She fondly remembered in her later years that the young man returned to Richland, after the tribe had been relocated to the federal reservation at Pentwater, Michigan. During his visit, he stayed at her house.3
